Top Wellness Trends for 2023 - The Black Girl Guide

Everyone is searching the new wellness trends for 2023 and you should too. 2023 is here and all this ‘New Year New You’ mess should start with your wellness.

Now I know wellness can be so white and we honestly feel left out, but I made it easy for you. I did all of the heavy lifting and put together wellness trends for 2023 that I think should be popular with us Black women.

Let’s find out what we can look forward to…

In 2023, the wellness industry is likely to continue moving toward more holistic approaches to health, with an emphasis on mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. So, if you already started this in 2022, this year is your chance to intensify your efforts.

We anticipate seeing an increase in the number of Black-owned businesses offering services in health and wellness, as well as an increase in the availability of health and wellness resources tailored to the needs of Black women. I am here for both of these!

Here are a few of the top wellness trends we anticipate seeing in 2023:

  • Plant-based diets: Plant-based diets are becoming increasingly popular and are a great way to promote physical health and wellbeing. We anticipate seeing an increase in the number of Black-owned businesses offering plant-based meal deliveries, cookbooks, and more.

  • Mindfulness: Mindfulness practices such as yoga, meditation, and breathwork are becoming increasingly popular and have been found to have positive benefits for mental health. We anticipate seeing an increase in the availability of mindfulness classes and resources tailored to the needs of Black women.

  • Holistic health: Holistic health focuses on treating the whole person, rather than just the physical symptoms of an illness. We anticipate seeing an increase in the availability of holistic health services tailored to the needs of Black women.

  • Self-care: Self-care is an important part of overall health and wellbeing, and we anticipate seeing an increase in the availability of self-care resources tailored to the needs of Black women. We anticipate seeing an increase in the number of Black-owned businesses offering services such as spa treatments, art therapy, and more.

If we want to get specific about what WE can get into based on the different categories - here’s a list.

Sensehacking

So apparently Sensehacking is a big wellbeing trend for 2023. What is it? It is using the power of our senses to improve our mood. As we head into a time of economic turmoil, any way to boost your mood easily and cheaply is welcome. So…finding easy ways to boost the senses at home includes using diffusers, candles, wax melts, or pillow sprays, and color psychology to make our environment spark creativity, positivity and boosting our mental health.

Wellness Travel or Wellness Tourism

This was big in 2022 and will continue in 2023. It’s all about trips and travel experiences that focus on mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing to help recharge the body and relax the mind. Think spa retreats and mountain getaways.

Biophilic Design

This will continue in 2023. We will continue incorporating nature with our space design. Everyone is expected to be a Plant Mom this year!

Beauty

Beauty is going DIY. I’m talking press-on nails, printed custom nail art, and at-home hair dye. You know I love a good DIY. I love this for us because we get to choose more vegan and cruelty-free options for how we beauty and self-care.

And then there’s Psychodermatology. This will take over in 2023. This means “skin health” and “mental health” will no longer be thought of in isolation, so get prepared for stress-relieving beauty. This is good for us Black women because you know we are high on the stress list. So, yes to this!

At Home

We'll design our homes around circadian health, so stuff like circadian-friendly retrofits - dimmable lighting, blackout shades, sunrise clocks and bedroom & sleep health will get personal - sleep was never really a one-size-fits-all, so I am super excited about this one.

Brightly Colored Blooms

Plants - greenery has been big since 2020, everyone and their mama became a plant MOM but trends show that adding Brightly colored blooms will overtake greenery in 2023. Here's to some bright flowers! (video serve up a bouquet in hand) We are brightening things up at home with pops of color.

Mood-Boosting Bathroom Design

In 2023, we will see an increase in bathrooms as wellness spaces in themselves, where homeowners can enjoy some true R&R. I'm not sure what to think about this one bc I don't spend that much time in my bathroom, but call me if you need upgrade ideas. You know I love a good makeover or declutter. (Shameless plug - I’m currently taking new clients.)

Fitness

We’ll start tracking our inactivity - Measuring how much time we spend sitting or laying down.

And there you have it, wellness trends to inspire your wellness journey. Let me share this warning, if you do look to popular trends to figure out what your wellness looks like, be extra careful. There is a lot of misinformation out there, so be mindful of what you are choosing to consume. Don’t just copy others or follow a wellness trend because it seems most popular, figure out what really works for you.

We hope these predictions help you stay ahead of the curve when it comes to health and wellness in 2023!
